Frankfurt Book Fair 2020 – the Special Edition was Special for Slovenia too!

This year, when the Frankfurt Book Fair announced its mostly digital edition, the Slovenian Book Agency decided not only to digitalize all Slovenian events but to develop an entire virtual book fair stand. The visitors were thus able to pick their own avatars, have a look at our virtual book exhibition and new videos, as well as take a walk around our stand and talk to us in real time. Surely a new and unique experience for many visitors and the first and only virtual stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020!

A virtual Meet & Greet of German and Slovenian publishers

On 27th October we carried out our regular annual networking event of German and Slovenian publishers – only this year we met virtually instead of personally. The conference, which took place at the virtual Slovenian book fair stand, started with an introduction of the Slovenian book market by Renata Zamida, the director of the Slovenian Book Agency. Anja Kovač, coordinator of the project Slovenia – Frankfurt Guest of Honour 2023, presented financing opportunities for foreign publishers, which were followed by presentations of 10 Slovenian publishers, who talked about the highlights of their programmes.

Check out the video of the event for highlights in Slovenian fiction, non-fiction and children’s books!

Art in Crisis – a New Short Film by the Slovenian Book Agency

The Covid-19 epidemic is a time to re-examine all that we had previously taken for granted, including art. Five Slovenian authors, a world-famous philosopher Alenka Zupančič, immunologist and writer Alojz Ihan, author Mojca Kumerdej, journalist and author Mojca Širok as well as author and translator Jasmin B. Frelih, talk about art in crisis on empty streets of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

The premiere of the film was on 16th October at the Bookfest digital festival of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Slovenian poet Katja Gorečan at Transpoesie Festival

Every year Slovenian Book Agency in cooperation with the Embassy of Slovenia in Brussels brings one Slovenian poet to the international poetry festival Transpoesie in Belgium. This year the festival, which is organized by EUNIC Brussels, the European Union National Institutes for Culture, took on a hybrid form and the Slovenian participant, Katja Gorečan, participated online.

Subsidies for foreign publishers in 2020 – a short overview in numbers

In 2020 we published three calls for proposals: one for translations of Slovenian authors into foreign languages, one specifically for publications in German language and one for the support of printing costs. All together we distributed 245.361€ through 128 subsidies for projects in 26 different languages.

The results are published on our website within individual calls.
