Before we all run off for the summer, we would like to share with you some exciting Slovenian literature stories and echoes. Besides the Novel of the Year Award, given away just this weekend (the jurors have read more than 100 novels, before deciding on a short list of five, which we present), we introduce some French insides to Slovenian literature, along with various fresh reviews in international media. We hope to see you all at Frankfurt Book Fair, where we will launch the redesigned and enlarged Slovenian National Pavilion in Hall 5.0., so set aside Wednesday, 11 October at 13.00 for a brunch in the Slovenian garden. The Slovenian stand will also host various Slovenian publishers with their individual meeting tables (among them Miš, Sodobnost and Goga Publishing Houses), in addition, the Publishers Mladinska knjiga, Beletrina and Sanje will have their individual stands at the fair. Featuring: »Novel of the Year« short-listed Titles
The Midsummer Eve in Slovenia is traditionally booked for the Kresnik Award for the best novel of the year. Every year, over one hundred novels enter the selection process, while the jury chooses the nominees. The winner is announced at the ceremony, where he or she receives a cash prize and is given the honour of lighting the traditional bonfire at the top of the Rožnik hill accompanied by the midsummer procession.
This year's final five nominees were: Mojca Kumerdej, Tadej Golob, Gašper Kralj, Tomo Podstenšek and Goran Vojnović. Finally and after much deliberation, the 2017 Kresnik Award was awarded to Goran Vojnović for his fascinating novel The Fig Tree (Figa).

Phébus Editor Nils Ahl About the Slovenian Literature Phenomenon
On 8 April, also known as International Romani Day, the French Phébus publishing house (part of the Libella Group) published Liza Japelj Carone’s French translation of the novel Namesto koga roža cveti titled Halgato, penned by Feri Lainšček, one of the most acclaimed representatives of contemporary Slovenian literature. Before the book’s official launch, a French delegation of journalists and Phébus representative travelled to Slovenia to visit the enchanting region of Prekmurje, the main inspiration for Lainšček’s works.
During the occasion, an interview with Nils Ahl, editor-in-chief of Phébus’s literary translations department was done. What follows is a brief summary of the conversation.
A Poetic Truth of the World
The journalist of Le Figaro, Thierry Clermont writes of Lainšček’s novel Halgato (Phébus publishing house, translated by Liza Japelj Carone) being virtuosly written and compares him in his poetical realism with Gabriel García Márquez. He quotes Lainšček’s view that the Gipsys are the last unsubmissive nation in Europe and reproaches French publishers with the fact that the readers had to wait for 25 years to be able to read this magical and poetical story about the friendship between two Gipsy boys, each choosing their own way towards integration...

English translator Rawley Grau, who translated the novel Panorama (Istros Books, 2016) from Slowenian writer Dušan Šarotar is one of the eight nominees for the prestigious Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize 2017. The prize is given for book-length literary translations into English from any living European language. It aims to honour the craft of translation, and to recognise its cultural importance. The 2017 shortlist included eight books from an outstanding entry of 127 titles in translations from 26 different languages.
Not long ago also the writer of the novel Panorama, Dušan Šarotar, receive a recognition from well-known online literary website Literary Hub. The author Emily Temple selected his novel Panorama as one of the Eight Worthy Literary Heirs to W. G. Sebald, who would have been 73 on 18th May 2017.

Špela Čadež Enthrals Fans of Orange is the New Black
The most renowned and internationally acclaimed Slovenian animator Špela Čadež has done it again! This time around, her animated short film bedazzled the fans of Netflix’s hit TV series Orange is the New Black. “A real masterpiece!” or “I haven’t seen anything as good as this for a long time!” are only a few from among the scores and scores of enthusiastic reactions.
The animated short featuring puppets was commissioned by Netflix. The producers of the popular comedy drama aspired to find a unique way to summarize all previous seasons to ease the wait for eager fans of the series before the start of Season 5. Špela Čadež produced the short film titled Orange is The New Black: Unraveled in collaboration with members of the Finta production company. She remained faithful to the “spirit” of the show.
Špela Čadež has become an established name on the global film animation map. Her short film Boles (2013) was screened all over the world and won her over 50 awards, distinctions and prize nominations. Similar success appears to be in the stars for her latest creation titled Nighthawk, which has also received many festival awards and prizes, among them the Grand Prix of the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) and the top prize of the Croatian Animafest Zagreb festival – one of the largest and the second-longest running animation festival in the world. The latter accolade is particularly important, as it secured Špela Čadež’s nomination for the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

At the yearly National Publishing Congress on June 6th we hosted Suhrkamp's Petra Hardt and translated her book Buying, Protecting and Selling Rights. In addition to the lecture she gave at the congress, she had a workshop on rights issues at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana, where also the picture was taken.
