Ljubljana Reads at the "Sa(n)jam knjige" Book Fair in Pula
In collaboration with the Municipality of Ljubljana, the Slovenian Book Agency (JAK) will bring approximately 20 literary guests and as many events to the festival. The events are not all of literary nature as featured guests also come from the musical, visual art and scientific Slovenian realm respectively. The diverse cultural and artistic programme will be ennobled by first-rate cuisine from the Slovenian capital.
The Slovenian guests scheduled to appear at the festival are: Svetlana Makarovič, Josip Osti, Svetlana Slapšak, Goran Vojnović, Agata Tomažič, Jure Eržen and Boštjan Videmšek, Mojca Kumerdej, Sebastijan Pregelj, Maja Gal Štromar, Jože Suhadolnik, Klemen Košir, Metka Krašovec, Alenka Sottler, Hana Stupica, the music group Laibach and Zoran Predin.
A special event will also be dedicated to the memory of two Slovenian poetry greats, Aleš Debeljak and Tomaž Šalamun.
Ljubljana Reads will be officially opened on Saturday, 3 December 2016, at 21:00 (9:00 PM) at the Gallery Sveta srca (Sacred Hearts) in Pula with the unveiling of the accompanying exhibition and a performance by the legendary music group Laibach.
A roundtable discussion for librarians titled Knjižnice v UNESCO-vem mestu literature: Ustvarjanje novih modelov predstavljanja knjig [Libraries in UNESCO City of Literature: Creating New Models of Book Presentation] is scheduled for 30 November 2016, before the official opening of the fair. Speakers at the event will include Jelka Gazvoda, Director of the Ljubljana City Library; Veronika Rijavec Pobežin, Head of the Users and Special Collections Department at the Ljubljana City Library; and Tijana Barbić Domazet, Director of the University Library of Pula who will act as the moderator. As a reminder: Ljubljana has previously been selected as the World Book Capital 2010 and joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2015.
This year's international programme with the central topic of Transatlantic will be directed towards forging ties between Europe and South America. The international focus will be dedicated to the literatures of Brasil, Portugal and Spain. Many distinguished literary names of international acclaim are scheduled to attend the fair. The list includes names such as the Syrian-French poet Adonis - a perennial favourite for the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Angolan-Portuguese writer José Eduardo Agualusa, the Portuguese writer Inês Pedrosa, Spanish author Lucía Etxebarría and many more.
