Founded in 1951, the Theatre in the Basement is the oldest independent theatre in Central Europe and one of the oldest in the world. It is seen as a dÊbut and première theatre, with emphasis on Austria and South-Eastern Europe. The Theatre in the Basement positions itself as a theatre of possibilities that brings the unknown, the under-represented and the under-appreciated out of the shadows. In its laboratory, it illuminates the little known and seeks and researches theatrical language(s) of form to present the respective subject of investigation adequately in an illuminating and entertaining manner.
