Summary:
How to live and write in an environment, where you are surrounded by a different language?
Description:
Erica Johnson Debeljak comes from the USA but has been living in Slovenia for several decades, where she translates to English and also writes in English herself. Rather than being originally published in English, her books are published in their Slovenian translation and are considered a part of Slovenian literature. Her novel Verliebt, verheiratet, verwitwet, verhurt, the most popular book of the year when it was published in Slovenian, was recently translated to German by Metka Wakounig and published by Rƶmerweg Verlag. The novel is an honest narration of the authorās painful experience of widowhood after her husband, the esteemed Slovenian poet AleÅ” Debeljak, passed away unexpectedly. Carlos Pascual comes from Mexico and has also been living in Ljubljana for several years. He writes in Spanish but his work is published in translation by his wife Mojca MedvedÅ”ek. In Slovenia he is deemed as a Slovenian author as well and has received the Novo Mesto Short prize (MaruÅ”a Krese prize) for his autobiographical prose. The moderator, a previous collaborator of the Frankfurt Book Fair and also a yoga instructor and freelance cultural worker, Karina Goldberg, originates from Buenos Aires. She will talk with the authors about life and creating in between two cultures, Slovenia and Slovenians, and about their own work. The conversation will be held in English.
