Maja Haderlap: Nachtfrauen
The author tells the story of the lives of three generations of Carinthian women, of their involvement in imposed and internalised patterns, and of their struggle for independence. The story of the women of the night is a story of loss, silence and guilt, in which, despite everything, tolerance and mutual respect, perhaps even love, are not given up.
When Mira gets in the car and sets off for South Carinthia, she knows she is in for some difficult days: her elderly mother has to be prepared to move out of the house where she found shelter decades ago as an unskilled worker with her then young children. In the weeks that follow, memories of a traumatic childhood, burdened by the early death of her father as well as by the rigid patriarchal order and dogmas of the Catholic Church, thicken. Old, unresolved conflicts create a new space and Mira begins to understand that they are fuelled by the long-suppressed life stories of her ancestors.
