Night Women

Participants: Maja Haderlap
Moderator: Ruthard Stäblein

Summary: Maja Haderlap presents her new novel.

Description:

Maja Haderlap is deeply affected by the history of Slovenia. Her father was a Slovenian partisan and was tortured by the Nazis. She reflected this in her first novel, Angel pozabe (Angel of Oblivion), which won the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize.

In her new novel Nachtfrauen (Women at Night) (Suhrkamp), Haderlap once again re- and deconstructs the story of her origins. Only this time the narrator's mother is of Slovenian origin. A daughter visits her old, sick mother in a village that lies in the border area between Austria and Slovenia. Her brothers want to put the mother in a retirement home. The daughter does not want agree with this plan and during her visit and in conversation with her mother in a Slovenian dialect she explores her own history and the history of the women in her family.
