Slovenian Film Retrospective: Granny's Sexual Life; On Wings of Paper

Granny's Sexual Life (Babičino seksualno življenje)

Urška Djukić, Émilie Pigeard, Slovenia/France, 2021, DCP, 1.33, B&W / colour, 13', English subtitles

Four elderly women reflect on their memories of old times – the first half of the 20th century, when they were young and the relationships between men and women were very different. Their voices merge into the single voice of Grandmother Vera, who tells her story in proper detail. The 2023 European Film Award for Best Short Film.

On Wings of Paper (Na papirnatih avionih)

Matjaž Klopčič, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), 1967, 35mm, 1.66, B&W, 79', English subtitles

With his camera, photographer Marko (Polde Bibič) captures a girl (Snježana Nikšić) whom he would like to meet. The girl is a ballet dancer who lives alone with her mother. The photographer meets her by chance and they take a walk in the park. Later, he phones her, asking her to describe her room. In winter, he rents a cottage in the mountains, where they make love. They also go to a party together. Despite her mother’s disapproval, the ballet dancer decides to get married. A movingly beautiful love poem, a manifesto of Klopčič’s modernism.
