Slovenian Film Retrospective: In the Dark; The Ballad of the Trumpet and the Cloud

In the Dark (V temi)

Žarko Lužnik, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), 1979, DCP (shot on 16mm), 1.37, colour, 19', English subtitles

A film about a man, a villager of Žalna named Janez Rus, who, for fear of being punished for his alleged cooperation with the collaborators, hid from the authorities for thirty years, and a film about the village he was hiding in.

The Ballad of the Trumpet and the Cloud (Balada o trobenti in oblaku)

France Å tiglic, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), 1961, 35mm, 1.66, B&W, 79', English subtitles

The voices of wounded partisans are heard coming from a mountain cave. Three White Guards appear at Temnikar’s (Lojze Potokar) door, singing a Christmas carol and announcing that they are going to exterminate the wounded men that the partisans left behind in the cave. Temnikar knows he has to stop them. A dark, yet illuminating, erratic, but unambiguously clear expressionistic ballad about the hard (here especially ethical) existence of ordinary people during the national liberation struggle.
