Slovenian Book Agency at book fairs in Leipzig and Bologna

Slovenian Book Agency (JAK) will again participate at the Leipzig Book Fair, which will run from 27 until 30 March, with a national stand and a vibrant programme of events with Slovenian authors. The fair and various events around the city will feature Nina Dragićević, Maja Haderlap, Miha Kovač, Aljaž Koprivnikar, Ana Marwan, Nina Mav Hrovat, Carlos Pascual, Tamara Štajner, Nataša Velikonja and Žiga X Gombač. Also participating will be translators Erwin Köstler, Urška P. Černe and Tanja Petrič. The programme is organised in cooperation with Traduki, the Slovenian cultural centre SKICA Berlin, Norway, Guest of Honour, and the Literaturhaus Leipzig.
As usual, the JAK stand will be located in Hall 4, this time at number D315.

The Bologna Children's Book Fair, where Slovenia was Guest of Honour last year, will start just after Leipzig. This year, the fair will take place from 31 March to 3 April. Representatives from publishing houses Malinc, Miš, Pivec, Sanje and Sodobnost will be present at the JAK national stand in Hall 29 / C32 and D31 and are available for meetings. Mladinska knjiga and Morfem will also be present at the fair with their independent stands (Mladinska knjiga at 29/C35 and Morfem at 25/A137).

Calls for translations and printing costs are now open!
Foreign publishers can now apply for this year's grants for translation and printing costs.

  • Call for funding of translations from Slovenian
    The JR4-P-2025 call will award funding to selected applicants for translations to be published by foreign publishers by 31 August 2027. Eligible works include adult and children's fiction, essays and critical works in the field of culture and the humanities, to be published in book form or performed in theatre, by authors in the Slovenian language or by authors are part of the Slovenian cultural space.
    Deadline for applications: 14 April 2025.
  • Call for funding of printing costs of translated books
    The JR5-TRUBAR-2025 call will cover the costs of printing the first editions of books in foreign languagesby authors in the Slovenian language or by authors are part of the Slovenian cultural space. The call is open to works of fiction and humanities for adults and children, as well as essays and critical works in the field of culture and art, to be published by 15 November 2025.
    Deadline for applications: 14 April 2025.

    New for the calls for translation and printing costs: from this year onwards, applications for the two calls will also be possible only in electronic form.

Opportunities for translators from Slovenian

- Travel grants
The JP1-MOBILNOST-2025 call is available to Slovenian authors, publishers, editors, literary agents and translators into Slovenian as well as translators from Slovenian, regardless of their nationality. The call will remain open until 15 September or until funds are exhausted.

- Bursaries for translators from Slovenian
The JR9-DŠ-PREVAJALCI-2025 call for bursaries is scheduled to open in May 2025. Bursaries will be available to established and emerging translators from Slovenian.

- Translation seminar 2025
The 15th International Seminar for Translators from Slovenian will take place this year from 17 to 22 August in Ljubljana and Maribor. The seminar will once again offer an insight into contemporary Slovenian literature and provide opportunities to connect and network with Slovenian authors, critics, publishers, lecturers and other experts in the field of books.
The invitation to register for the seminar with all the information about the programme and the selection of books will be published in early May.

Still there? / Noch da? – Nine contemporary Slovenian authors
At the end of 2024, JAK published two booklets, one in English and one in German, with carefully selected excerpts of nine Slovenian writers and poets: Blaž Božič, Ajda Bračič, Ivana Djilas, Nina Dragičević, Špela Frlic, Dijana Matković, Pino Pograjc, Andrej Predin and Pia Prezelj.
Translations into German in Noch da? Neun zeitgenössische slowenische Autor:innen are the work of one of the best young translators into German Liza Linde: noch-da-highres.pdf.
The English translations included in Still There? Nine Contemporary Slovenian Authors were done by Jasmin B. Frelih, an acclaimed author of the younger generation of Slovenian writers himself: still-there-highres.pdf.

10 Books from Slovenia
The Center of Slovenian Literature, which each year selects ten highlights from books published in Slovenia the previous year, is hard at work finalising the 2025 edition of 10 Books from Slovenia.
